The beating heart of the system: the health of London’s postal workers, 1850–1900

Nicola Shelton, UCL

(Project no. 2000226)

This is part of a three-year project,"Addressing Health: Morbidity, Mortality and Occupational Health in the Victorian and Edwardian Post Office", which explores the timing and geography of ill health, and the responses of the Post Office and the workforce. By tracing workers from retirement until death, the project also explores the links between ill health and mortality. The ONS Longitudinal Study will be used to analyse a comparative cohort from the late twentieth century to look at occupational health, retirement, cancer and mortality among contemporary post office workers to explore change over time.
