Intergenerational transfer of class and property: a study of occupational mobility and home...

Sin Yi Cheung, University of Cardiff

(Project no. 1009699)

Conventional social stratification research is largely concerned with occupational attainment and income inequalities. It rarely pays attention to consumption and wealth. This project aims to investigate the relationship between social class and home ownership among Black and Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups, by comparing them to the majority British Whites, controlling for qualification, gender, age, marital status and number of dependent children. It asks if intergenerational transfer of home ownership is lower among BAME groups compared to the majority British Whites, and if British-born BAME groups are more likely to be home-owners than their foreign-born parents.
