Mortality rates by ethnic group and deprivation in the general population

Naomi Holman and Naveed Sattar, University of Glasgow

(Project no. 0301688, previously 30168)

The data will be used to calculate directly standardised mortality rates by ethnic group for specific causes of death and by deprivation.

It is known that people from South Asian and Black ethnic groups have a higher prevalence of diabetes.  There is some (inconclusive) evidence that people from these ethnic groups with diabetes have lower mortality than their peers from white ethnic groups.  This is being investigated separately.  However, there is little available data on mortality by ethnic group in the general population against which to compare potential ethnic differences in mortality among those with diabetes.  This project would identify patterns of mortality by ethnic group in the general population to provide contextual information for a broader programme of research.
