Second generation Arabs in London

Ramy Aly, University of Sussex

(Project no. 30102)

This project is an ethnography and history of 1st generation migration and 2nd generation subjectivity.  The thesis looks in depth at the social practices of British born or raised Arabs and aspects of social and political life. The data I am requesting will help go towards a chapter on community demographics.

I already have settlement and naturalisation figures of those holding Arab citizenship or born in MENA who have been granted British citrizenship between 1962 and 2007. However this does not give any indication of the number of people born to Arabic speaking parents in the UK. I need some indication of the number of people born in Britain who have recorded themselves as Arab/North African in the 1991 and 2001 census ethnicity questionairre. This is my main concern at the moment.

I also have a document published by the Greater London Authority (DMAG2005/19 London Country of Birth Profiles The Arab League) which is based on census commissioned tables SCT021 (C0116) which provides information on Demography, Housing and amenities, Health, Qualifications, Economic activity (16-74) and Employment.  It would be good to get a regional national picture with which to compare this London data. However, this is a secondary concern dependent on the time it would take, I may not be in a position to pursue this at this point.
