Mortality, cause of death and associations with education, family structure, labour market outcomes

Xiaowei Xu, Institute for Fiscal Studies and Lucy Kraftman, Department for Education

(Project no. 1012767)

This project will compare trends in mortality by socio-economic status in Britain and the US over the last 50 years, with a particular focus on midlife mortality and deaths related to drug overdose, suicide and alcohol-related liver diseases. We will investigate the extent to which differences in mortality trends can be explained by differences in the evolution of labour market conditions in Britain and the US. Our analysis will provide new evidence on trends in mortality by socio-economic status in Britain, and through comparisons with the US, shed light on the potential relationship between mortality and labour market outcomes.
