A social network analysis of social mobility data

Vikki Boliver, University of Durham

(Project no. 1010308)

This project will use longitudinal census data for England and Wales to explore patterns of intergenerational occupational mobility, using social network analysis methods to express the strength of intergenerational mobility links between occupations as social ties of different degrees of strength. The aim of the study is to assess the extent of intergenerational occupational mobility (e.g. using network density measures) and to explore the existence of sub-networks of occupations (e.g. using clique analysis) which might be indicative of relatively closed occupational classes.
