Socio-economic effects on educational inequalities across the life-course

Ian Plewis, University of Manchester, and Mel Bartley, University College London

(Project no. 30132)

The aim is to enhance previous analyses on the relation between intra-generational social mobility and educational attainment, using the 'highest qualifications' variable from the 2001 Census. This research links to work by Bartley and Plewis on the effects of intra-generational mobility on limiting longstanding illness which suggests that this mobility acts as a gradient constraint. These analyses will indicate whether the same phenomenon is found for educational qualifications. The research is being carried out as part of the programme of the ESRC Research Centre: International Centre for Lifecourse Studies in Society and Health, directed by Professors Bartley and Blane.
