Internal migration streams will be analysed in order to observe the internal movements of immigrants to England and Wales. The use of longitudinal data will allow for more detailed insights of the actual spatial movement patterns of immigrants and make multilevel modelling possible.
The research aims to analyse immigration to England and Wales on a national and local level. On the one hand, immigration to England and Wales might help mitigate the negative effects of population ageing. But on the other hand, because of regional selectivity combined with internal migration, it will most likely lead to an increase in regional demographic disparities. With the analysis of longitudinal internal migration data, a more detailed view of the composition of migration streams between regions will be available. Inter alia, it will be possible to obtain a clearer picture of the demography of migrants (the migrant's household composition, the skill and education level of migrants, and the regional movement patterns of migrant subgroups). Thereby, micro-data will help identifying the migrants' respective subcategory, e.g. labour migration. Moreover, the investigation of the main reasons for their occurrence will be made possible, which will enable the prediction of future regional migration trends.
This again is vital to projecting demographical scenarios and the impact of internal movements on the local economy and social fabric. The analysis of internal migration streams is just going to be a vital part of the research.
