Investigating individual and inter-generational changes in ethnicity over time and...

Rohini Mathur, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Emily Grundy, London School of Economics and Political Science

(Project no. 30151)

This project examines whether individuals change their ethnicity over time to understand how later generations define their ethnicity in relation to their parents ethnicity or country of birth. It also examines whether a relationship between self reported ethnicity and health exists in the 2001 Census.

The data are requested to complete the first portion of an ESRC funded PhD project investigating the relationship between ethnicity and healthcare usage and outcomes across the UK.

The data are requested to:

1. Give a representative profile of the UK population so that the growth of ethnic minority populations can be charted over time.

2. To allow longitudinal follow up of individuals over time to relate their ethnic identity to health status, and whether this identity changes over repeated surveys.

3. To understand how the ethnic identity of later generations differs from that of their parents and grandparents and how this manifests for descendants of migrants, descendants of British born parents and children of mixed parentage.

4. To examine whether there is a relationship between area measures of ethnicity (ie. areas of >50% ethnic minority), and individual measures of ethnicity - and whether changes in ethnic identity are associated with changes in place of residence.

5. To examine the relationship between ethnicity and health indicators in 2001
