Estimating local intergenerational social mobility: carers versus noncarers in England and Wales

Gwilym Pryce and Maria Petrillo, University of Sheffield, and Franz Buscha and Emma Gorman, University of Westminster

(Project no. 2003057)

This project examines the role of unpaid caring responsibilities on intergenerational social mobility between and within regions in England and Wales. We assess correlations between carer and social mobility status to understand whether caring responsibility affects intergenerational social mobility, and variation in the relationship between geographic and social mobility for carers versus noncarers to compare intergenerational mobility at subnational spatial scales. We consider the impact of unpaid caring responsibilities on the distribution of mobility transitions, with respect to ethnicity and neighbourhood. Our results will be published in peerreviewed journal articles and will inform public policy decisionmaking with respect to support for unpaid carers.
