We will examine the labour market response to a specific and well-defined technological shock, namely the introduction of containerisation in UK ports in the 1970s. This response can be measured by following workers who were employed in geographic locations that contained ports before containerisation and tracing patterns of re-employment (in new occupations, industries and places of work), unemployment or inactivity. We will use a case-control design, and compare the affected workers with a control group of workers who were not affected by containerisation.
