The impact of permanent industrial decline on education and intergenerational mobility

Laura van der Erve, Oxford Policy Management and Imran Rasul, UCL/Institute for Fiscal Studies

(Project no. 1013604)

Recent work has highlighted geographical differences in educational achievement and intergenerational mobility in the UK. Understanding the drivers of these differences, and the factors which make certain areas perform better than others, are crucial in the design of policy to improve these outcomes. This project is looking at one of these possible drivers: the local labour market. Specifically, it aims to understand how industrial declines, such as mining closures - which affect the local labour market opportunities for both parents and their children - affect educational decisions and intergenerational mobility.
