Franz Buscha, Emma Gorman and Min Zhang, University of Westminster and Patrick Sturgis, London School of Economics and Political Science

(Project no. 1014420)

Our objectives in this research project are:

1.  to provide robust evidence on sub-national variation in patterns of intergenerational social mobility in England and Wales and

2.  to assess low spatial and temporal variation in mobility rates is associated with the concentration of elective secondary education in local areas.

We will do this by:

1.  Estimating correlations between the occupational status/social class of parents and their adult children in the ONS Longitudinal Study (ONS-LS) at different sub-national geographies;

2.  Assessing how inter-generational social mobility is associated with geo-temporal variation in the concentration of selective schooling.
The research project is a continuation of prior social mobility work using the LS.
