Children of the 1990s – extending understanding of social mobility in England and Wales

Emma Gorman, Franz Buscha and Min Zhang, University of Westminster

(Project no. 2004554)

This research will provide a description of intergenerational social mobility in England and Wales (E&W), and its causes and consequences. Using data from the ONS LS, including data from the 2021 Census, we will examine “the children of the 1990s” and how their social mobility changed compared to previous cohorts. We will correlate measures of economic and social status for parents and their children, using standard regression modelling, disaggregating our results by gender, ethnicity and region. By producing the most up-to-date picture of social mobility in E&W, this research provides a robust evidence-base for policy.
