  • JRO = Joint research office. 

The JRO is the office that links research (either from UCL or UCLH) with the hospital resources. To carry out a clinical or observational study at the UCLH or NHNN you must contact the JRO before starting any activities or applying for funding. About | Joint Research Office - UCL – University College London

Contact the JRO if you want to:

  1. Set up a clinical trial;
  2. Set up a observational study (example: identification of a biomarker in patients)
  3. Set up a biobank;
  4. Patient and public involvement and much more.
  • RIS = Research and Innovation Services = contracts

 Research and Innovation Services (RIS). The team advises on administrative services, review and approves grant proposals ahead of the submission. This is a mandatory step in UCL grant lifecycle. Contact a member of the RIS to:

  • TRO = translational research office. 

The UCL Translational Research Office (TRO) provide practical support to researchers across the university. From project management and translational funding support to initiating strategic collaborations both internally and with industry partners. Contact the TRO if you want to:

  • UCLB = tech transfer.

  • UCLC = consulting services.

At UCL you are entitled to 40 days of consultancy work per year. This applies to academic staff, such as lecturers, readers, and professors at UCL. If you are not part of one of these categories, please talk to UCLC directly. UCL Consultants | UCL Consultants Ltd - UCL – University College London

UCLC charges a fee of 20% of the overall project value for projects below £75,000 and 10% for projects with an overall project value of £75,000 or more. Please note, this fee may differ for Bespoke Short Courses. UCLC is not funded by UCL, though all profits made is gifted to the university.

Contact UCLC if you want to:

  2. carry out a service for a fee (such as doing a set of experiments for a certain amount of money (IP owned by the client only) 
  3. organise short bespoke courses for a fee to institutions, biotech or pharma.
