Martyn Rady will introduce his latest book, which
is exactly as it says on the cover, a brief history of the Habsburg Empire.
The
book, Published by Oxford University Press, covers the entirety of Habsburg history, from the origins of the dynasty
in the Swiss Aargau to its eclipse in 1918. It looks not only at the Central
European possessions of the Habsburgs, but also at their Spanish, New World and
Pacific possessions, which at one time reached to the Chinese mainland and
coast of Japan.
The book is aimed at a general audience. It attempts to be amusing. The text is enlivened with some unusual illustrations, such as this portrait of Franz Ferdinand, whose murder in Sarajevo precipitated the First World War (right).
