Alumni

Welcome to the SSEES Alumni webpage.

Welcome to the SSEES Alumni Association webpage. We are very pleased that you have found your way here. Fostering the wider SSEES community is our key aim, and so, if you have come across this page and are not receiving regular communication from us, we would love to include you in our community. If you graduated since SSEES joined UCL, we evidently do not have an up-to-date email address for you. To rectify this situation, please update your details with UCL Alumni. If you were at SSEES when it was an independent entity within the University of London, you also need to register via the ‘Update your details’ link, as alumni details are held centrally in UCL.

The SSEES Alumni Association was inaugurated by Professor Emeritus Faith Wigzell in 2011. Over the following years we held semi-annual get-togethers at Taviton Street. Usually these events were interesting and thought-provoking talks kindly given by SSEES lecturers followed by a chance to catch-up over drinks and nibbles. Occasionally we met up at the cultural events like the theatre or art galleries. One year we held an Eastern European Food & Drink event at SSEES which proved so popular it became part of our annual calendar!

2015 marked the centenary of the foundation of SSEES. A large range of activities took place, including a grand alumni dinner and a fund raising effort to support our current students with scholarships.

Of course the pandemic has curtailed our activities. We hope very much that you have kept well during this time and our thoughts are with those of you who have suffered. As lockdown eases and we can return to physical meetings we hope to extend an invitation to everyone to SSEES in the Autumn term. In the meantime, we are planning some online events which you can join from the comfort of your own home.

The Alumni Association works with the school's career's tutor, Dr. Ben Noble, to provide advice and help between the alumni and with current students. Alumni who would like to participate in the careers talks or become mentors are always very welcome. So do please get in touch.

If you have an opportunity which you think would suit SSEES Alumni we will be more than happy to post it on the SSEES LinkedIn page.

The SSEES Scholarship fund is important to the association. We raise money for this from events and occasional sales of memorabilia items. The centenary mugs were very popular.

Keep in touch to receive details of this as well as of our regular talks, parties and outings in London to events with an East European flavour. Registering will also bring our biannual newsletter UnSSEESing into your inbox. We hope to see you at an alumni event in the not too distant future.

We love hearing from former students, so please feel free to contact us at p.gabalova@ucl.ac.uk

Alumni Events

Alongside the biannual talks that take place at SSEES for Alumni (almost always followed by a party), the SSEES Alumni Association often organises less formal events to exhibitions, film screenings, opera and other various East European and Russian-related happenings in and around London.
