International applications

Country-specific information, including details of when UCL representatives are visiting your part of the world, can be obtained from the International Students website.

If you do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry to this undergraduate programme, you may be eligible to apply for the Engineering Foundation Year at UCL. Designed for individuals from non-traditional educational backgrounds who do not meet standard entry requirements for UCL's undergraduate engineering degrees, this pre-degree programme helps you develop confidence, academic and study skills, and subject specific knowledge. On successful completion of the Engineering Foundation Year, you can gain access to a selection of the engineering undergraduate degree programmes at UCL. Find out more about the Engineering Foundation Year.

Access and widening participation

UCL is committed to widening access to higher education. If you are eligible for Access UCL you do not need to do anything in addition to the standard UCAS application. Your application will be automatically flagged when we receive it.

Undergraduate Preparatory Certificates

The Undergraduate Preparatory Certificates (UPC) prepare international students for a UCL undergraduate degree who don’t have the qualifications to enter directly. These intensive one-year foundation courses are taught on our central London campus.

Typical UPC students will be high achievers in a 12-year school system which does not meet the standard required for direct entry to UCL.

For more information see: ucl.ac.uk/upc.

English language requirements

The English language level for this programme is: Level 1

Information about the evidence required, acceptable qualifications and test providers can be found on our English language requirements page.

A variety of English language programmes are offered at the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education.

Course overview

The programme includes core mathematical, computing and mechanical engineering subjects. You will also study business and accountancy. Your individual project in the third year should include a business element but will primarily be concerned with engineering. The same structure is in place for the group design project in your final year.

You will study this programme in the context of our Integrated Engineering Programme, giving you the opportunity to:

  • tackle practical engineering challenges throughout your programme
  • develop transferable professional skills
  • study and collaborate with students in other engineering disciplines

You may opt to take an additional year working in industry between the third and the fourth years of your degree programme. This posting needs UCL approval in advance and you are required to write a comprehensive report on your work and what you have learnt during the year.

UCL offers a range of global opportunities to undergraduate students. In your second year you may also consider applying to study abroad for your third year as part of UCL's Go Abroad programme.

What this course will give you

You will benefit from our internationally renowned research expertise, as this cutting-edge knowledge is passed on to you through our teaching.

You will have access to MechSpace, a dedicated student facility for designing and building mechanical engineering prototypes. You will also have the opportunity to learn and conduct projects in our research laboratories; including nanoengineering, materials testing, engine cells and wave tanks.

The problem-solving, analytical skills you develop at UCL Mechanical Engineering, alongside your understanding of accounting and business, will make you an attractive candidate for employers in many other fields. These include commerce, banking and management consultancy.

This programme is highly respected both within the UK and abroad, and accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as meeting the academic base requirements, in full, for registration as a Chartered Engineer for the 2014-2022 student cohort intakes. The programme is in the process of reaccreditation by IMechE for 2023-2027 intakes.

Teaching and learning

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Upon successful completion of 480 credits, you will be awarded a MEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering with Business Finance.

Modules

Please note that the list of modules given here is indicative. This information is published a long time in advance of enrolment and module content and availability is subject to change. Modules that are in use for the current academic year are linked for further information. Where no link is present, further information is not yet available.

Your learning

You will be taught in a variety of ways, including lectures, example sessions, laboratory classes, computer workshops and project work. Along with MechSpace, a dedicated student facility for designing and building mechanical engineering prototypes, we offer extensive computing facilities. Our main research laboratories are also used for laboratory classes and for research-based project work.

On average, students spend approximately 30% of their time in lectures, 15% in tutorials/example classes, and the remainder in independent study. Design and project modules deviate from this distribution, depending on their learning objectives.

Assessment

Throughout your degree programme, your progress will be assessed through a combination of examinations and coursework. You will be required to meet or exceed a range of academic criteria throughout your studies.

Accessibility

Details of the accessibility of UCL buildings can be obtained from AccessAble. Further information can also be obtained from the UCL Student Support and Wellbeing Services team.

UCL supports the Year in Industry scheme, providing you with the opportunity to spend a year away from formal study, gaining key skills and experience.

Employability

We place great emphasis on supporting you to develop transferable professional skills, alongside your engineering knowledge, from the word go. This gives you a significant advantage in forging the career of your choice. You can benefit from our dedicated Engineering Careers team, links with industry and internship opportunities.

Accreditation

In order to meet the Engineering Council requirements for an accredited degree (which apply to all programmes professionally accredited by the Engineering Council, across all universities), students on this programme must pass all modules, with some possible specific exceptions for a limited number of optional modules. If a student fails a module (two attempts are permitted) they may be eligible to transfer to a related non-accredited degree.
