Undergraduate Preparatory Certificates

The Undergraduate Preparatory Certificates (UPC) prepare international students for a UCL undergraduate degree who don’t have the qualifications to enter directly. These intensive one-year foundation courses are taught on our central London campus.

Typical UPC students will be high achievers in a 12-year school system which does not meet the standard required for direct entry to UCL.

Course overview



The UCL Law Faculty offers a wide range of subjects and employs a variety of teaching methods. The degree programme provides both a general liberal education and a foundation for careers not only in the legal profession but also in fields as diverse as the civil service, local government, social services, higher education, the armed forces, business, industry, media, finance, and accountancy.

As one of the world’s leading law schools, UCL Laws is at the forefront of legal research and innovation. You’ll be taught by academics shaping the future of law and policy, gaining insight into the latest legal developments and real-world challenges.

Your law degree will provide significant knowledge of areas of law required for the first stage of the Solicitors’ Qualifying Exam (SQE). It is also recognised by the Bar Standards Board of England and Wales (BSB) as meeting the academic requirements for training to become a barrister. Alongside legal knowledge, you will develop essential skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. You will also have opportunities to gain practical experience through activities like mooting, client interviewing, negotiation competitions, and pro bono work at the UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic, giving you invaluable hands-on experience before you graduate.

You will gain a specialist understanding of Hispanic legal concepts and terminology in Spanish, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to engage with Spain’s legal system and traditions. In your third year you will study abroad at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, one of Spain’s leading law faculties. Here, you will follow a Spanish-taught curriculum, immersing yourself in the Spanish legal system and academic culture while expanding your international legal perspective. In your final fourth year, you will return to UCL Laws, where you will tailor your degree with a range of optional law modules, including the opportunity to complete a research essay in a legal area of your choice.

Please note: Students are responsible for maintaining their Spanish language proficiency throughout the programme, as UCL Laws does not offer language tuition. Transfers to the standard LLB are only permitted in exceptional circumstances.

What this course will give you

You will spend your third year abroad studying Hispanic Law at the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid.

The year spent abroad studying Spanish Law will enhance your critical analysis skills and equip you for the fourth and final year at UCL.

In your final year at UCL, you will be offered a wide range of modules which will give you the opportunity to explore certain fields more in depth and build an expertise.

The international scope of our degrees is reflected in the content of different topics, itself reflecting the expertise of our staff in international and comparative law.

Teaching and learning

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Upon successful completion of 480 credits, you will be awarded a LLB (Hons) in Law with Hispanic Law.

Modules

Please note that the list of modules given here is indicative. This information is published a long time in advance of enrolment and module content and availability is subject to change. Modules that are in use for the current academic year are linked for further information. Where no link is present, further information is not yet available.

We start the first two weeks of the first academic year with a two-week induction programme: Laws' Connections: Legal Doctrine and Contemporary Challenges. Laws' Connections is designed to be an inspiring introduction to the study of law here at UCL Laws, and to the role of law in addressing social challenges.

You will then study compulsory modules in Public Law, Contract Law, Property I and Criminal Law during Year 1 of the programme. Students on the programme are also required to undertake a European Legal Studies (Spanish) module (taught in Spanish) in both Years 1 and 2 at UCL. In Year 1, the module introduces the general principles governing the law of contracts in Spanish Law.

In Year 2 you will take four more compulsory modules: Tort, Property II, European Union Law, and European Legal Studies (Spanish). In Year 2, the European Legal Studies modules includes tuition in Spanish about the fundamental branches of Spanish Public Law.

The third year of study is spent abroad at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. The typical programme of study comprises four full-year courses or eight one-semester courses in Civil/Private Law, Public Law, and optional courses in Hispanic Law.

In the final year you will return to UCL and will choose 120 credits from a list of optional modules. One of them could be a research essay on a legal subject of your choice, subject to approval by the department. It may also be possible to take up to 30 credits from modules outside of Laws in place of a Laws optional module, subject to availability and approval.

Your learning

During your time at UCL, you will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, and in tutorial groups. We encourage substantial student participation and class discussion in seminars and tutorials, based on the basis of prepared work. Considerable emphasis is placed on small-group teaching where you will benefit from individual attention and advice.

All programmes begin with an intensive induction course in Year 1, consisting of 15+ hours delivered over two weeks. Typical contact hours thereafter range from 6 to 14 hours per week, depending on the programme, year of study, and module choices. These contact hours include a combination of lectures, seminars, and tutorials.

In addition to scheduled teaching, students are expected to dedicate 26 to 34 hours per week to independent study. This includes activities such as exploring key topics, conducting research, completing required readings, and preparing for the modules studied throughout the programme.

In Year 3, contact hours will depend on the partner university and the modules selected by the student at that institution.

Assessment

You are required to pass written assessments each year for each of your modules. You may also be assessed by way of, for example, group work/presentation.

Should it be seen as being like your political views or should it be seen as being your identity, like your race or sex? How does how the law defines religion affect how it deals with issues such as rules restricting the wearing of religious symbols at work?

The foundation of your career

The wide range of skills and subjects learned throughout your degree open up many opportunities when you graduate. Many UCL Laws graduates move directly to further vocational study and train to become solicitors or barristers. Recent graduates have also chosen employment in a range of industries such as financial services, policy and government, and charities and NGOs. Some have selected to undertake further academic study.

Employability

As a law student, you will develop a critical awareness of how the law operates and may be changed, sharpen your reasoning skills, and to develop both the technical expertise to solve legal problems and the ability to assess whether a solution is fair and just.

Accreditation

All our undergraduate programme degrees are compliant with the QAA subject benchmark statement for law and contain the "Foundations of Legal Knowledge" subjects, as well as the skills associated with graduate legal work such as legal research.

Fees are for Undergraduate 2025/26 entry and are for the first year only. Fees for subsequent years may be subject to increase: Student Terms and Conditions. Additional costs

This programme includes one year abroad (Year 3) at our partner institution, Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. You will not pay the full UCL tuition fee for the year abroad and students do not currently pay tuition fees to the host institution. 

There will be standard costs incurred for purchasing books, stationery, printing and photocopying. 

Please note that study abroad during your programme at UCL is likely to incur additional costs. Studying abroad may cost between £200–£1,000 per month depending on where you choose to study. The cost of studying abroad can be difficult to predict as it will depend on your priorities and choices. There is more information available on the UCL Study Abroad website.

For in-person teaching, UCL’s main teaching locations are in zones 1 (Bloomsbury) and zones 2/3 (UCL East). The cost of a monthly 18+ Oyster travel card for zones 1-2 is £114.50. This price was published by TfL in 2024. Funding your studies

In 2019, UCL Laws introduced the UCL200 Law LLB Opportunity Scholarship to support eligible students in financial need to study law at UCL. This scholarship is designed to assist undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds on the LLB programme. Each scholarship provides recipients with a maintenance bursary of £15,000 per year for the duration of their degree.

While the scholarship does not cover tuition fees, the bursary can be used flexibly for any purpose, helping students manage living costs and other expenses. For the latest details about this and other funding opportunities available for 2026/27, please visit the UCL Laws website.

Candidates are required to demonstrate complete fluency in Spanish in addition to the standard entry requirements. Candidates will be assessed through their UCAS applications, the National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT) and, in the case of laws with a language programmes, an interview to assess language capability. The LNAT is a requirement for all applicants and candidates must take the test by the advertised deadline for the cycle they are applying in. Applicants must link their LNAT registration details to UCL. Although your proven academic achievements are important, a knowledge of law is not required. Demonstration of your perseverance in past achievements (e.g. in your academic work) along with a strong, genuine and intelligent motivation for studying law will contribute to your successful admission to UCL.
