Tuition fees and financial help

Information on the cost of tuition fees for your time abroad, and eligibility criteria for financial assistance.

Tuition Fees

  • Students who are studying abroad for less than a full academic year will pay full UCL fees as normal.
  • 'Home' fee payers undertaking a study abroad for a full academic year (whether at a university or work placement, Erasmus or otherwise) will pay 15% of the normal fee amount to UCL.
  • 'Overseas' fee payers will pay 50% of their normal fee amount to UCL

Students on an exchange programme with one of UCL’s partner universities will not be required to pay tuition fees to the host institution.

Erasmus students will not be charged for tuition by the host institution, but may be charged a student enrolment or registration fee. You are expected to pay this fee yourself (typically in the region of €250) and will not be reimbursed by UCL.

Student Loans and Grants

The following information relates to Student Finance England. Students who receive support from Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland or Student Awards Agency Scotland should check with their funding provider for information on their respective study abroad support.

If you are eligible to get Student Finance funding whilst studying in London, you are also able to get funding during your study abroad. This includes a tuition fee loan to cover fees and a maintenance loan at the ‘overseas’ rate.

Student Finance applications open in February for the following academic year. Make sure you get your application in as early as possible so that you know how much you will be receiving in advance, and to avoid delays in payment.

Travel Grant

The Travel Grant is available to full-time students who receive Student Finance funding and study abroad as part of their course.

The amount of Travel Grant that you can get depends on your household income. It covers reasonable travel expenses during the academic year, which means you must buy the most cost-effective tickets using the most economical and practical form of transport. The first £303 of travel costs is disregarded, which means this is deducted from the amount of travel grant you apply for.

For further information on eligibility, the application process and payment information please visit Student Finance England Travel Grant

UCL Undergraduate Bursaries

Students who are entitled to receive the UCL Undergraduate Bursary will continue to do so whole on their year abroad, provided they continue to pay their tuition fees to UCL. More information can be found on the Student Funding website

UCL Financial Assistance Fund

The UCL Financial Assistance Fund provides financial assistance for students who encounter unexpected hardship. Students on Study Abroard are eligible to apply, as long as they meet the other eligibility criteria.

BUTEX UK Scholarships

The BUTEX UK Scholarship is open to all undergraduate students currently registered at a UK university which is BUTEX-affiliated. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a study abroad or exchange place which is not eligible for an ERASMUS grant. Your place must be for a minimum of one semester.
