    Programme summaries

    Provost's Leadership Programme (former Heads of Department Programme)

    This programme aims to provide UCL’s most senior leaders, who are new to their role with a comprehensive overview of the strategic context within which their role operates, an understanding of their leadership role and responsibilities and an enhanced self-awareness of their leadership style. All new Heads of Department, Directors of Research Divisions, Heads of Research Departments and members of the Professional Services Leadership Team are invited to participate in a suite of activities supportive of their new senior UCL leadership and management responsibilities.

    This training is by invitation only.

    Programme aims:

    • Further participants’ understanding of their role as a Head of Department or Director to deliver UCL’s long term goals;
    • Explore the high-level financial, people and other management responsibilities of the role and what this means in practice for Heads of Department and Directors;
    • Develop a network of contacts that will support the participants as a leader and manager throughout their appointment;
    • Provide participants with an opportunity to participate in 360 degree feedback so that they may understand how their leadership style is perceived, how they interact with others and to identify areas for further development.

    Future Leaders Programme

    This programme aims to enhance personal leadership capability, to build organisational capacity for adaptive change, improve efficiency in times of diminishing resources and develop capability for working collaboratively to deliver effective outcomes in and through strategic partnerships. It consists of eight modules and includes action learning, executive coaching, a business-critical project and a reflective journal. During the programme, participants will also be required to undertake pre-work and follow up activities to put the learning into practice whilst stretching traditional boundaries of leadership and engagement. 

    Programme aims:

    • Continue to promote a clear vision of leadership and management culture across UCL and build the capabilities needed for success;
    • Support the development of academic and professional leaders of exceptional potential;
    • Focus on developing strong leadership and management teams which work effectively and successfully - individually and in partnership with others;
    • Encourage action learning and reflective practice to increase individual capacity to adapt to complex systems and changing cultures.

    Programme modules:

    The programme consists of nine 1 day modules over a duration of six months:

    Women in Leadership Development Programme 

    There are many initiatives taking place across UCL, with the aim of achieving gender parity. This programme contributes to that aim by directly supporting the leadership and therefore career development of staff that self-identify as women. The programme explores what leadership is, different leadership styles, personal purpose and vision and building confidence and presence. It is designed specifically to support the career development of participants as such participants also explore career opportunities and pathways for progression. Two parallel levels of the programme are offered, one for women currently in senior roles, at grades 9-10, and the other for women in grades 6, 7 and 8.

    Self-managing Leadership (NEW for 2019/20) 

    A blended learning programme suitable for existing and future leaders. The 10-step model helps participants identify their purpose, values and vision in order to define the focus and character which defines their leadership. The programme will start and end with a face to face workshop to set learning objectives and explore learning impact. Upon completion participants will have their own 90-day action plan focused on the few things which will have the largest impact, for both personal and professional development.

    Programme aims:

    • Learn how to lead through influence, not authority
    • Learn how to transform bad habits and patterns into good ones
    • Learn how to make better choices by being a ‘detached observer’
    • Develop and strengthen your intuitive, emotional and social intelligence
    • Identify and leverage your core strengths and qualities
    • Focus on the few things that will have the greatest impacts on your life
    • Create breakthrough goals and an action plan to execute them
