UCL Accommodation recognises and prioritises students who are new to UCL, life at university, and the UK. For UCL Accommodation, ‘prioritised’ means that these new students are offered accommodation ahead of returning students. During the academic year 2024-25, all applicants who met the eligibility criteria were allocated a place in UCL Accommodation.
It is recommended that you submit your UCL Accommodation application as early as possible, after choosing UCL as your firm choice. Offers are made between April and August. Please note that not all offers are all generated at once.
You don’t have to live in UCL Halls, but it’s a great opportunity to meet other new students and start life at university.
Step 1: Check if you meet the eligibility criteria
To be considered for a place in UCL Accommodation, you must meet the eligibility criteria.
Students guaranteed accommodation
- Students under 18 years old (as of 13 September 2025) are guaranteed to receive an offer for UCL Accommodation in the following halls: Ian Baker House, James Lighthill House or Ramsay Hall. Please note that we are unable to allocate under 18s to twin rooms.
- UCL Accommodation welcomes and supports applications from students with additional requirements, and will support them to ensure they are allocated rooms that meet their needs. As a part of the application process, you will need to provide recent and relevant evidence that supports the need for a specific room type. Additional needs can include health issues or additional needs, including: physical and invisible disabilities, neurodivergent conditions, care-experienced students, estranged students and those at risk of being homeless. More information is available on the Students with Additional Requirements webpage.
Families and couples
UCL has very limited accommodation for those who would like to live with their partner, family, or children. All students applying for UCL or University of London accommodation (except International Hall) should apply directly through the UCL Accommodation Portal. Students with children are advised not to bring them to London until firm arrangements for accommodation are in place. Additional information, including which Halls offer Family Accommodation can be found on the Halls webpage.
Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC), International Pre-Master’s (IPM), Intercalated BSc (iBSc), and Study abroad and exchange students
- Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC) students
Students on the Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC), intensive one-year foundation course are eligible to apply for UCL Accommodation and are considered equivalent to first-year undergraduate students for the purposes of allocating accommodation..
If you live in UCL halls during this course you will be ineligible for prioritised UCL Accommodation during later studies, unless you have additional requirements.
- International Pre-Master's (IPM) students
Students on the International Pre-Master’s (IPM) are eligible to apply for UCL Accommodation and are considered equivalent to first-year undergraduate students for the purposes of allocating accommodation.
If you live in UCL halls during this course you will be ineligible for prioritised UCL Accommodation during later studies, unless you have additional requirements.
- Intercalated BSc (iBSc) students
UCL cannot provide an accommodation place for Intercalated BSc (iBSc) students, and we would advise you to look into alternative accommodation to secure non-UCL Accommodation.
- Study abroad and exchange students
Full-time undergraduate students attending a full academic year at UCL on Junior Year Abroad (JYA), Erasmus or Exchange programmes are considered equivalent to first-year undergraduate students for the purposes of allocating accommodation.
Students intending to attend UCL for less than an entire academic year cannot be guaranteed an accommodation place due to the limited number of spaces available.
If you are not eligible for UCL Accommodation
If you are not eligible to be prioritised for UCL Accommodation, either because you do not meet the Eligibility Criteria or because you are holding UCL as an insurance offer, we advise you to look into Alternative Accommodation.
Step 2: Consider your options
Review the UCL Accommodation Halls webpage to learn more about the accommodation available. All UCL Halls are categorised into different zones and bands to help you budget and understand the distance from your UCL campus when applying. Additionally, there are rooms in halls managed by private providers and intercollegiate halls managed by the University of London.
Step 3: Start the application process
To get started, you will need to log into the UCL Accommodation Portal. As you progress through, you will be prompted to choose your room type preference and your preferred maximum weekly rent. Please note that due to the large number of applications, these preferences are not guaranteed to be met.
Step 4: Apply before the application deadline
- 10 June undergraduate application deadline
- 30 June postgraduate application deadline
Step 5: Submit your completed application
Your application is submitted through the UCL Accommodation Portal. Offers are sent out from April until August. Please be patient, as not all allocations are generated at once.
