Support for trans students at UCL

3 December 2020

At UCL, we pride ourselves on our inclusivity and diversity. If you identify as trans, you're welcome at UCL! In this article we discuss the support that is available to you.

Whether you are considering or are already in the process of transitioning gender, it can be a difficult and complex time and we are here to support you through that period.

What support is available?

Student Support and Wellbeing are linked with a list of great services to ensure you have access to the support you need. We can either directly support you or link you in with relevant support services elsewhere.

Gendered Intelligence

UCL has a close partnership with Gendered Intelligence (GI), who provide expert support to students at any stage of the transitioning process. They are a not-for-profit community interest company who specialise in supporting trans youth. Take a look at their website for more info.

Students' Union UCL LGBT+ Students’ Network

The LGBT+ Students’ Network at UCL provide a network of social and welfare support to LGBTQ+ students. The network are great at providing guidance to students regarding changing gender. Check out their website to get in touch with them for further info and support.

Student Support and Wellbeing

We can also offer in-house support to our trans students if that's right for you, whether that's through speaking to one of our advisers for a supportive conversation and guidance, or therapeutic support if needed from Student Psychological and Counselling Services (SPCS). The SPCS team also partner with local mental health and wellbeing services to find the support route that's right for you. All our students are welcome to contact Student Support and Wellbeing for a friendly chat if you would like to know more. More details are available on the SSW website.

Depending on your circumstances, SSW can also work with you to update your student record and liaise with your department on your behalf. The processes might sometimes seem confusing, but we're committed to ensuring your gender transition is as smooth as possible. Check out our Policy and Guidance for Students Transitioning Gender and 'A Student's Guide to Changing your Gender at UCL', put together by the Students' Union, for more information and some useful links.

We wish you all the best with your student journey at UCL!
