Immigration and visas

Guidance for international students applying for visas to study at UCL, including information on Student visa applications, Biometric Residence Permits (BRP), Digital Immigration Status, working in the UK, the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS), medical electives, and the Graduate Route visa.

UG students who hold a Tier 4/Student Visa   

If you are currently overseas: 

  • You can complete your studies via distance learning for the remainder of the academic year.
  • However, if you have not previously entered the UK during your current grant of Student Leave and you are in the final year of Undergraduate studies and wish to apply for the Graduate Route, you will need to arrive in the UK by 30 June 2022 in order to be eligible.

If you are currently in the UK:

  • You will be permitted to complete your studies via blended learning for the remainder of the academic year.

Please note that if you are currently on a Study Abroad or Industrial Placement year, this guidance will not apply and you can continue your study abroad year or placement as usual.

PGT students who hold a Tier 4/Student Visa

If you are currently overseas and studying via distance learning:

  •  If you started your programme on 27 September 2021, and have been completing your studies via distance learning, you would be required to return to the UK by 30 June 2022 to complete your studies in the UK.
  • Please note that if you are unable to return to the UK by 30 June 2022, we will be required to withdraw sponsorship of your visa.

If you are currently in the UK: 

  • If you are currently in the UK, and wish to write up your dissertation from home or conduct fieldwork, you will need to apply for 'Study Away'.  You can do this by completing the Study Away from UCL form and submitting it to the Student Immigration Compliance Team via AskUCL. If you plan to return to the UK, UCL will continue to sponsor you on your Tier 4/Student Visa. If you are planning to apply for the Graduate Route, you must plan to return to the UK before your current Student Visa expires.
  • If you are not planning to return to the UK, UCL will withdraw sponsorship of your Tier 4/Student Visa.
  • Please note that in the event that UCL is required to withdraw sponsorship of your Student Visa, you will not be eligible to apply for the Graduate Route.

If you are PGR student and hold a Tier 4/Student Visa
  • If you are a PhD student who started your programme via distance learning and started between 27 September 2021 - 30 June 2022, and are being sponsored on your Student Visa, then you will be required to return to the UK by 30 June 2022 to complete your studies in the UK.
  • If you have not yet obtained your Student Visa, please note that you will be required to obtain your Student Visa prior to your return to the UK. To request a CAS, please contact the Student Immigration Compliance Team.
  • If you are on a period of Study Leave which requires you to be outside the UK, please note that you can continue on this as normal without your Student Visa being affected.  
  • If you are writing up your thesis, are currently outside the UK and are currently being sponsored on a Student Visa you can continue with your studies as normal. However, if you are in the final stages of your course and wish to apply for the Graduate Route Visa then you will need to enter the UK before your Student Visa expires.
  • If you are currently writing up your thesis outside the UK and no longer wish to be sponsored on a Student Visa, please let the Student Immigration Compliance Team know by contacting them via AskUCL. Please note that should UCL withdraw sponsorship of your Student Visa, you will not be eligible to apply for the Graduate Route.
