Digital Immigration Status

If you have been granted a Digital Immigration Status by UKVI, this page provides you with further information on how to access this information and what you need to do in order prove your digital immigration status to UCL.

Who will receive a Digital Immigration Status?

EU/EEA/Swiss Nationals and Non visa nationals applying inside the UK using the ID Check app after 31^st December 2021. You will be granted a Digital Immigration Status by the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) once your application for entry clearance/leave to remain has been successful.

If you are an EU/EEA citizen who has been been granted pre-settled/settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, then you will also have been granted a Digital Immigration Status.

Will I receive a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)?

You will not receive a BRP (Biometric Residence Permit), or any physical documentation for your visa. Instead, you will receive an email from UKVI, which will include details of your immigration permission. The email will detail your visa start and end dates, the conditions of your immigration permission (what you can and cannot do whilst in the UK). If you have been granted a visa under the Tier 4/Student Route, the email will also state that your sponsor is University College London and the name of the programme you will be studying.

Please ensure you carefully check the email making sure the length of your course, name of your sponsor and course are all correct. If any of the details are incorrect, please contact our Student Immigration Advice Team via AskUCL.

How can I view and prove my Digital Immigration Status?

To prove your immigration status, you will need to provide a PDF copy of your Share Code to UCL. If you are a new student, you will to provide this information as part of the pre-enrolment task on Portico. If you are a current student, you can upload this PDF to the Visa and ID upload function on your Portico homepage. UCL will then use this information to verify your immigration status, and save a copy of this verification to your student record.

You will be able to generate a sharecode from the View and Prove Government webpages Access your digital status and generate a share code selecting ‘Start Now’. Please ensure you choose the purpose of the check as ‘other’ instead of 'work' or 'rent', as these codes will not work to check your status.
