Glossary - R

Referential (meaning) - a theory of meaning that connects the meaning of a word to the real world and the things that are in it, so that the meaning of the word ‘chair’ is the actual chair itself (the object)

Regular - following the rules of grammar.
for example the plural of ‘printer’ in English is ‘printers’, following the English rule of making plurals by adding an ‘s’ to the singular. the plural of ‘tooth’ is ‘teeth’. this is an irregular plural
for Dutch plurals can be formed with ‘s’ or ‘en’:
‘paard / paarden’, ‘fietser / fietsers’
but there are also irregular plurals:
‘schip / schepen’ ‘lid / leden’

Representational - theory of meaning that connects the meaning of a word to concepts in the mind, which in their turn may be related to objects in the real world compare: referential

Rewrite rule - a rule is a statement expressing a generalization about the facts of a language. in a rewrite rule we state that everything left of the arrow turns into everything right of the arrow in a given context, which is described after the forward slash

(voiced consonant becomes devoiced consonant at the end of a word)

Right-headed(ness) - the fact that a phrase is head final
