V2 - see Verb second

Velar - the velum is also known as the soft palate, the soft part of the roof of your mouth (at the back)
velar sounds are [k], [g] and [ŋ]

Verb second - the fact that in Dutch main clauses the verb always comes in second place
‘Jij ZIET dat’, ‘Gisteren HEB ik gefietst’

Verb phrase (VP) - a phrase whose head is a verb

*Verbs - verbs are words that describe an action or activity
‘John GIVES me the book’ ‘Jane THOUGHT about it’

Voiced - a sound produced with vibration of the vocal chords
[b], [d], [v], all vowels

Voiceless - a sound produced without vibration of the vocal cords
[p], [t], [f], etc.

Vowel - a speech sound produced with no obstruction of the airstream (Trask, 339)
