Glossary - A

*Adjective - word that modifies a noun a GREEN house, a NICE garden, a BEAUTIFUL cat

Affix - an element with a grammatical function that cannot form a word by itself, and therefore needs to attach to a word. housING, crudeNESS

Allophone - different realisations of the same phoneme [p h] and [p], the different [r] sounds of Dutch

Alveolar - sound made with tongue touching the alveolar ridge [t], [d], [n] etc. Alveolar ridge the hard tissue just behind your teeth

Ambiguous - double, or unclear, meaning homonyms are ambiguous > he went to the BANK

Antonyms - words with opposite meaning cold-warm, small-big, hot-cold

Approximant - sound made with only a little obstruction [υ] and [j] as in Dutch : warm and joker

*Articles - in English the, a and an are articles. In Dutch the two definite articles are de and het, the indefinite is een.

Aspiration - the little explosion of air after English plosives [p], [t] and[k]. pin = [phin] , tin = [thin] and can = [khaen]

Assimilation - when a sound changes to fit its phonetic surroundings the [n] in ‘unclear’ changes to velar [ɳ]to adapt to the velar [k]
