Glossary - M

*Main clause - a main clause is the essential component of a sentence, and must contain at least a subject and a predicate
‘They saw a cat’ ‘He hit the ball’ ‘I exist’ etc.
‘Zij zagen een kat’, ‘Hij sloeg de bal’, ‘Ik besta’ enz.

Manner of articulation - the way in which a sound is produced, as opposed to the place where a sound is produced
(tap, plosive, fricative etc.)

Minimal pair - a pair of words that differ only in one sound, but mean something else. used to determine what phonemes a language has bank – rank , beer – here, care – dare, etc.

Monophthong - a single vowel sound, as opposed to a diphthong.

Morphology - in linguistics, morphology is the part of syntax that studies the structure of words.
