Undergraduate Employability Checklist
This checklist is to be used by both undergraduate students and undergraduate personal tutors. Its aim is to help remind you of the sorts of activities you could become involved in throughout your course which will improve your employability skills and career development.
It relates to the Key Skills Initiative at UCL.

Year 1 - What to do
- Develop your skills and reflect on your options
- Get work experience
- Build your CV
How to do it
- Discover how you can develop your skills at UCL by visiting the Skills4Work Website
- Take part in extra-curricular activities, e.g. clubs and societies advertised through UCL Union
- Visit the UCL Careers Information Library
- Keep up to date with relevant job vacancy information, (including internships), and events by registering for UCLAlert!
- Talk to a careers adviser in a 15 min "Short Guidance" session to discuss your options or
- Get your CV/cover letter/application form checked by an "Applications Adviser"
- Meet recruiters and develop skills at the same time by getting involved in one of the many Skills4Work Events
- Attend one of the "Themed Week" events to learn more about different sectors
*and Second Year if you're on a 4-year course.
Penultimate year - What to do
- Explore internships and further work experience opportunities
- Research opportunities and deadlines
- Attend careers events
How to do it
- Use employer directories and vacancy listings on our Finding a Job page
- Meet a wide range of recruiters when they visit UCL to give Employer Presentations
- Attend one of UCL's 7 Careers Fairs to meet employers and learn about the graduate roles and internships they offer
- Keep up to date with relevant opportunities and approaching deadlines by registering for UCLAlert!
- Participate in a range of careers related Competitions and Business Challenges
- Meet recruiters and learn more about their opportunities whilst further developing your skills at UCL careers events such as Focus on Management
- Explore postgraduate study options by using the UCL Careers Information Library and attending The Careers Group Postgraduate Study & MBA Fair
Final year and beyond - What to do
- Research job vacancies or postgraduate courses
- Make applications
- Practice interviews and assessment centres
How to do it
- Keep up to date with graduate opportunities by collecting free copies of directories and bulletins from UCL Careers Information Library
- Look at our website to find information about further study and/or funding
- Get your CV checked by either an Employer or Applications Adviser
- Participate in a Practice Assessment Centre or a Personality Profiling Workshop to help prepare for group selection activities
- Try an Online Aptitude Test to boost your confidence before applying
- Book an individual Practice Interview with a Careers Consultant or an Employer
- If you feel you would benefit from 2 more years FREE usage of the Careers Service after you complete your course, join UCL Careers Graduates.
