Careers

Graduates follow a broad range of career trajectories following graduation, ranging from clinical practice and hospital posts to research and academic careers. Graduates are eligible for a wide range of UK and international career opportunities and are well-equipped for further studies such as a PhD.

If you are inspired by the opportunities of oral surgery and eligible to work in the UK, you may go into NHS or private dental practice. Alternatively, depending on your previous experience, you could apply for competitive NHS clinical training posts, either foundation DCT (Senior House Officer) posts in UK teaching hospitals or specialist registrar training posts to become NHS consultants.

Other graduates of the course have applied directly for specialty doctor/dentist and clinical fellowship posts. Graduates who are already qualified in both dentistry and medicine have successfully obtained competitive specialist registrar training posts, with the aim of becoming hospital consultants.

You just have to look into the academic backgrounds of the most prominent and talented dentists within the UK to realise that many of them trace at least a part of their training to this institute.

I gained a world-class Master’s degree in Endodontology but the greatest achievement was the friends I met during my time here. I feel privileged to be a part of a respected community.

The degree has opened many career doors, which previously did not exist. I share my time in private practice, hospital, and teaching. That has allowed me to fall in love with the profession.

  • In 1931, the Eastman Dental Clinic opened as part of the Royal Free Hospital to provide dental care for disadvantaged children from central London.
  • In 1948, the Eastman became independent of the Royal Free and its teaching arm became the Postgraduate Dental Institute of the Postgraduate Medical Federation.
  • The Eastman Dental Hospital and the Institute occupied 256 Gray's Inn Road until 2020, once the barracks of London and Westminster Light Horse Volunteers, a unit formed in response to the threat of French invasion in 1779.
