This clinical Endodontology MClinDent is for students who want to practise endodontics and become a specialist in the field. All applicants must hold an approved dental qualification and have a minimum of three years' clinical experience post-qualification.

The English language level for this course is: Level 3

About this degree


This clinically relevant Endodontology MClinDent will help you gain a broad and deep understanding of endodontology. You will develop the skills to apply appropriate clinical strategies based on first principles and be well prepared for a future as a specialist.

The programme is built on the principle of systematic deliberate practice. Our novel approach builds your cognitive, technical, and clinical skills and sets the foundation for you to develop your expertise. Following these processes will empower you towards a level of mastery, both during and beyond the programme.

Full-time students may opt to complete an additional year of clinical and didactic training to prepare for the Dental Specialty Fellowship Examination with the Royal Colleges' MEndo.

Who this course is for

The programme is best suited to qualified dental surgeons who wish to take their knowledge in Endodontology to an advanced level and achieve a high level of clinical competence in the field. The supervised research project provides a baseline experience for integrating this work into your career. The training also provides a platform for careers in teaching the discipline to students and fellow dentists.

Applicants for the course commencing in September 2026 will be eligible for entry to the new Royal College of Surgeons Dental Specialty Fellowship Examination (DSFE), leading to the Fellowship in Endodontics (F Endo,) which is replacing the existing Membership in Endodontology (M Endo). However, in view of changes to the eligibility criteria for the DSFE, agreed collectively by the Royal College of Surgeons, those wishing to sit the intercollegiate DSFE will be expected to have passed both sections of the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) Examination of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons.
Thus, applicants to our courses, for September 2026, who separately wish to sit DSFE will be required to:

  • Already be in possession of the MFDS qualification OR
  • Be prepared to sit the MFDS examination during the Course. 

Please note that it will be demanding to do this at the same time as undertaking an MClinDent. It is also important to note that if you were not successful in this, you would NOT be able to sit the Royal College of Surgeons DFSE. This would be a Royal College decision, and UCL would not have any way of influencing that decision.

This programme prepares students for future professional evaluation of clinical / academic competence as a specialist. It also forms a springboard for pursuing academic, clinical or research careers in endodontics.

The course prepares you to work in specialist roles such as endodontic practice principals, endodontic referral practice associates and specialty doctors.

It also leads to opportunities in teaching. Some of our graduates have gone on to lectureships and teaching fellowships at UCL, and to become specialty doctors at UCLH.

There are regular networking opportunities, including events where you can hear from expert speakers. We encourage students to broaden their skills and expand their networks by attending and participating at conferences.

Accreditation

This programme has been accredited by General Dental Council; Faculty of General Dental Practitioners; the London Deanery in conjunction with the Specialist Advisory Committee in Restorative Dentistry (as part of specialist training) and European Society of Endodontology (as part of specialist training).

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a series of interactive lectures and seminars, tutorials to integrate academic and clinical elements, self-directed seminars, and a study and journal club.

Skills laboratory simulation courses are geared towards developing specific cognitive and technical skills, while diagnostic clinics facilitate the development of diagnostic and treatment planning skills.

Students also get involved in:

  • The supervised treatment of patients
  • Multi-disciplinary clinics including a trauma clinic rota
  • Case conferences
  • Reflective logbooks to develop clinical skills
  • Courses on use of rotary instruments, use of microscope and surgical treatment
  • A self-directed endodontic techniques course
  • Presentations at conferences and clinical and research meetings
  • A supervised research project leading to a dissertation.

We use a variety of assessment methods.

Subject-specific knowledge is assessed through unseen written examinations (short answer questions, essays, multiple choice questions), and oral examination.

Intellectual, academic and research skills are assessed through unseen written essays, academic and clinical oral examinations, presented dissertation and its oral examination.

Practical and clinical skills are assessed through continuous assessment of simulated laboratory course work, simulated practical tests, clinical case-logs, oral examination of unseen simulated case, and oral examination of submitted case-reports.

Work-based assessments (WBA) are carried out during clinical supervised activity. These consist of:

  • Assessment of Audit (AoA)
  • Case Based Discussion (CBD)
  • Clinical Evaluation Exercise (CEX)
  • Direct Observation of Procedural Skills in Surgery (DOPS)
  • Multi-Source Feedback (MSF)
  • Observation of Teaching (OoT)
  • Procedure Based Assessment (PBA).

You will also undergo formative assessments to help you achieve your learning outcomes, such as:

  • Continual monitoring and feedback on simulation laboratory, clinical, and research activities
  • Continual monitoring of simulation laboratory, clinical, and research activities
  • Continual monitoring of seminar performance
  • Mock written papers
  • Mock oral examinations
  • Scheduled quarterly academic and research progress assessments through an internal graduate appraisal process.

Full-time students can complete an additional year of clinical and didactic training to prepare for the MEndo exit examination. The MEndo is administered, examined and awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, or the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Full-time students will have around 30 contact hours per week and usually attend five days a week throughout the year (except on UCL closure days). Part-time students must also attend five days a week for the first 12 weeks during the introductory course, and three days a week after that.

Based on full-time study, contact hours in the first year are formed of 6 hours of lectures, tutorials, and seminars, 9 hours of simulated skills laboratory courses, and 10.5 hours of clinical training. The remainder of the time is for research (your dissertation) and independent study (4.5 hours).

In Year Two, contact time is formed of 6 hours of lectures, tutorials, and seminars, and 15 hours of clinical training. The remainder of the time is for research (your dissertation) and independent study (9 hours).

Full-time students take six taught modules and part one of the research dissertation in year one, and five taught modules and part two of the dissertation in year two. All modules are compulsory.

Students undertake modules to the value of 360 credits. Upon successful completion of 360 credits, you will be awarded an MClinDent in Endodontology.

This course requires a completed DBS check for some compulsory modules. You will receive more information from UCL on how to complete the check once you have firmly accepted an unconditional offer for the programme. A charge for Post Office ID verification (£15.00) needed for an application to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is payable by the student. The cost of the DBS check itself is paid for by UCL.

If you have lived, worked, studied or travelled in any single country outside of the UK for six continuous months or more, in the last five years, you will be required to obtain a Certificate of Good Conduct/Police Check from the relevant country/countries.
