New evidence for Saxon Lundenwic: ASE’s Stephen White on BBC Radio London

6 March 2024

ASE Archaeologist Stephen White was recently on BBC Radio London talking about the exciting findings from excavations at the National Gallery.

A man with a short beard, long hair in a ponytail and glasses, stands in front of a lectern talking animatedly.

Stephen appeared on the Shay Kaur Grewal show on the 5th March. He talked about how our excavations revealed new evidence suggesting the urban centre of Saxon London, known as Lundenwic, extended further west than previously thought. These planned excavations were undertaken before redevelopment as part of the National Gallery’s bicentenary project, NG200.

Stephen also chats with Shay and Professor Helena Hamerow from the University of Oxford about the general history of London, from the Roman city of Londinium to today, and what his dream archaeological find would be! Give it a listen from 2 hours 21 minutes, available until the end of March 2024.
