Louise Rayner, Director

Louise Rayner, BA, MSc, MCIfA, FSA

Louise graduated from the University of York and went on to complete her MSc in Technology and Analysis of Archaeological Materials at UCL.

Louise has been with ASE since 2005, responsible for post‐excavation, research and specialist services. She is an experienced project manager, managing a diverse range of archaeological projects and programmes, with a strong record of delivering quality programmes to budget and timetable. Her experiences include extensive project planning (both on commercial and Historic England funded research projects), management of multi‐discipline teams, design and delivery of outreach programmes, complex archaeological post‐excavation and publication programmes, and design and management of professional training programmes. She has full budgetary responsibility for all ASE post‐excavation projects and is managing editor of ASE’s in‐house monograph series SpoilHeap Publications.

Louise has been a ceramic specialist for over 25 years developing a career in pottery research predominately of the prehistoric and Roman periods in London and South-East England. She is currently Chair of the CIfA Finds Special Interest Group and in previous years served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Study Group for Roman Pottery. Her areas of expertise are prehistoric landscapes of South-East England, London in the pre-Boudican period, and prehistoric and Roman pottery production including distribution and function.

Field of expertise

Identification and analysis of charcoal, waterlogged wood, charred and waterlogged plant macrofossils with research interests in charcoal in funerary contexts; Woodland resource use and management; Macrobotanical remains as indicators of diet, trade and imports; Palaeovegetation and environmental reconstructions; Quaternary vegetation environments in southern Africa.

Management and coordination of environmental processing; Liaising with internal and external specialists, county archaeologists and Historic England science advisors; Selection and preparation of samples for dating; Developing and advising on sampling strategies and specialist sampling.

Lecturing on archaeological wood and charcoal identification and analysis at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew.
