Student Reflections on BA Archaeology with Placement Year

10 October 2023

With UCAS applications now open, Iris Rosas De Oliveira, placement student from 2022-23, reflects on her paid placement year with Archaeology South-East as part of her BA Archaeology at the UCL Institute of Archaeology.

A woman covered in mud smiles ruefully. an arrow points to her with the caption "Iris's year with ASE"

Thinking about going to uni but don’t know what to study? Maybe you like history but also enjoy science and technology, perhaps you want to do something a bit practical too?

You need to #ThinkDifferentlyThinkArchaeology! And check out the BA Archaeology with Placement Year at the UCL Institute of Archaeology! As well as three years studying at the IoA, this degree includes a 12-month paid placement in contract archaeology with Archaeology South-East. Our placement students get to experience the full archaeological process, from fieldwork to artefact analysis to illustration to archiving, and everything in between.

Here’s Iris Rosas De Oliveira, placement student from 2022-23, talking about her time excavating out on site with ASE. Iris started with limited excavation experience and her placement gave her space to learn and grow. She found a love for digging big features and a sense of pride and achievement when doing things she struggled with at first. Reflecting on how far you’ve come is a great message for #WorldMentalHealthDay!
