Brighton Young Archaeologists Club visit ASE

6 March 2023

On Saturday 25th February, the Brighton Young Archaeologist Club (YAC) visited Archaeology South-East's office in Portslade. Here's what they got up to!

A group of young people gather round a table. Steve is in the middle of the group, unpacking an artefact.

After a quick overview of what we do at ASE - given by Steve Patton - the YACs got to see a range of artefacts from our excavations. These objects covered the entire time span of what we find: Palaeolithic and Neanderthal flint tools, Late Stone Age Neolithic and Early Bronze Age arrows, Early Bronze Age and Roman pottery, and 20th Century military objects (including a bayonet and a helmet).

Next, the YACS were given a tour of the building, and Jake Wilson gave a talk on his book ‘Ancient Egypt’ and the important things to consider when writing about archaeology. The next hour was spent with the YACs writing their own stories and drawing storyboards, and the day was finished by sharing some of the fantastic work.

Our ASE colleagues had a great time, as well as the YAC group:

Steve said "It was great to work with the YACs again and meet some of the new members, plus it's always nice to get to show kids artefacts close up and to answer their questions regarding things that they've found."

Jake said “It's always a pleasure to come and talk to kids about my book, the importance of archaeology and the fun of creative writing.” – Jake

Thank you to Brighton YAC for visiting us!
