ASE Takes Stock: Naomi Humphreys, Senior Archaeologist (Geomatics Team)
19 May 2020
Naomi's work is normally very variable, involving both surveying archaeology in the field and processing and digitising data for plans and illustrations in the office. She's not furloughed, so how is she working from home?
Current work and situation
We can’t work in the field at the minute so currently I’m working on producing illustrations for some of the main sites we’ve been working on recently, including some incredible sites near Chichester and one in Kent. One difficulty of working from home is the temptation to make coffee and eat biscuits; it can be overwhelming at times but fortunately my cat helps me out by sleeping on my lap so I can’t get out of my chair!
Looking back on last year
Probably my favourite project in the year took place last summer where the team worked on an exciting archaeological site in West Sussex confirming the presence of an early-Roman settlement. The site had been identified through geophysical survey, and our trenches revealed the features identified and found several more too. We also had some incredible finds; my favourite being a pair of decorated bronze tweezers in such good condition I suspect they could still be used…sadly we can’t share these finds with you yet due to lockdown, so stay tuned!
Looking forward to post-lockdown
I’m most looking forward to being able to return to working outside – and of course working alongside my colleagues. I’m fortunate to have a job that I genuinely enjoy where no two days are ever the same.
