UCL renews its commitment to support UK postgraduate students with 200 Master’s Bursary awards

12 March 2024

Aimed at students from low-income backgrounds and based on financial need, the Master’s Bursary scheme provides £10,000 towards studying for a master’s degree at UCL.

In 2024-25, UCL will once again offer 200 bursaries to UK students from low-income backgrounds through the Master’s Bursary scheme. Since its inception in 2022, UCL has spent £4 million and supported 400 postgraduate taught students from the UK through its Master’s Bursary.

UCL recognises the difficulty students face in securing funding for postgraduate study, which has only been intensified by the rising cost of living. As a result, UCL has renewed its commitment to supporting master’s students through the launch of schemes such as the Master’s Bursary and the Global Master’s Scholarship (for international students).

The Master’s Bursary is designed to complement the UK government Master’s Loan and is open to students applying for standalone master’s programmes across UCL departments. The award is non-repayable and typically applied towards students’ fees. The scheme prioritises those who have received a low-income bursary during their undergraduate study but also considers other factors such as available funding, family background and current household income.

To apply for the Bursary, applications are made through UCL’s Master’s Funding Awards, an umbrella scheme that allows students to apply once and be considered for several master’s scholarships and bursaries on offer at UCL.

Poppaea Roberts, a 2022-23 Master’s Bursary recipient said:

“The bursary honestly made the difference between me being able to complete my master’s this year rather than me having to take a year out to work. Without it, I simply would not have been able to afford the tuition, so it made a huge difference.”

Kevin King, Head of Student Funding said:

“Our Master’s Bursary is aimed at widening access to postgraduate study. By offering needs-based support we can target funding where it is needed most. UCL’s commitment to offering 200 awards each year makes the Master’s Bursary one of the largest funding schemes at UCL.”

Applications for the scheme are now open; learn more about the bursary and how to apply.
