Initiatives and resources supporting the objectives of UCL's Education Strategy 2016-21

About us

Professor Anthony Smith, Vice-Provost (Education & Student Affairs) leads on Principal Theme 2 of UCL's institutional strategy, UCL 2034 - the integration of research and education.

"The way knowledge is created and shared is changing. So the way students access that knowledge and the way they make use of it is changing too. Our goal is to make UCL a global leader in the integration of research and education, underpinning an inspirational student experience (Principal Theme 2, UCL 2034)."  Professor Anthony Smith, Vice-Provost (Education & Student Affairs)

Professor Smith and his team drive improvements to UCL education under the framework of the UCL Education Strategy 2016-21:

  • personalising student support
  • putting research and enquiry at the heart of learning
  • improving assessment and feedback
  • developing student engagement and leadership
  • revitalising postgraduate taught education
  • creating a teaching estate to meet our needs
  • enriching digital learning
  • preparing students for the workplace and the world

What we do

First and foremost, we are working to embed research and enquiry in all levels of the student’s learning –  UCL Connected Curriculum. By directly involving our students in research, we equip them for the future and inspire a lifelong curiosity.
We pioneer creative interdisciplinary extra-curricular learning –  UCL Global Citizenship Programme.
We develop resources and training for all UCL staff who teach –  UCL Arena.
We consult students, gathering ideas and views to inform change – You Shape UCL.
We bring students and staff together in formal partnerships to improve systems, processes and course content – UCL ChangeMakers.
We coordinate new initiatives to enhance the student experience – Introductory Programme.
We manage UCL’s strategic educational partnerships including with the UCL Academy.

We also have an external remit, responding to and informing the UK education policy agenda, as well as providing thought leadership for higher education.
