Professor Kathleen Armour

On behalf of the Provost, I lead on education and the student experience at UCL. I took up this post in January 2022 before which I was Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Birmingham, with oversight of all aspects of undergraduate and postgraduate education.
I have extensive experience of leadership and research in education and professional learning. I have previously held posts at Brunel and Loughborough Universities, joining Birmingham in 2010. I was Head of the newly created School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences in 2012, before being appointed to Pro-Vice-Provost in 2016.
My educational qualifications include an MA in Education at the Institute of Education, now part of UCL.
My assistant is Jodi Feakes.

I lead on a number of UCL-wide initiatives, particularly in the area of digital education, including a pilot on fully online postgraduate taught provision.
I chair a number of institution-wide committees including the Academic Regulations and Quality Assurance Sub-Committee of Education Committee, the Student Recruitment, Admissions and Funding Committee as well as the Education Domain Group of the Digital Transformation and IT Investment Board.

I am Professor (Teaching) in Economics and Director of CTaLE. As Pro-Vice Provost, I work alongside Professor Kathleen Armour to support faculties and departments to address issues in their student satisfaction data, with a particular focus on Assessment & Feedback and Teaching Quality. This involves academic oversight of internal and external UG and PG surveys, as well as national benchmarking exercises like the TEF.
My areas of active research include:
- Addressing ethnic and other gaps in higher education access and academic outcomes
- The use of learning technology to enhance the student experience in large cohorts
- Cognitive biases in students’ learning behaviours
- Collaborative teaching and learning models

I work with the senior education team on all aspects of education and the student experience. My particular areas of focus are personal tutoring, partnership with UCL Students' Union, student voice, student engagement, and student life and wellbeing.
I was previously Dean of Students at Goldsmiths. Before that, I was the Director of Student Experience (Arts) at the University of Warwick.
I have a PhD in History from the University of Edinburgh. My current research explores the history of student voice in UK higher education.

I am the Director of UCL Careers, with overall responsibility for the development of employability education across UCL, supporting all UCL students, postdoctoral staff and recent graduates. Lately, this has involved my team working with academic colleagues to embed employability within the curriculum.
I am also the Acting Director of Arena (UCL’s Centre for Research-based Education) and am working on a new project alongside Professor Kathleen Armour to bring Careers and Arena together. This new unit, will lead the change for the broader development of UCL students both within and outside the formal curriculum, working in close partnership with colleagues and students across UCL.

Fiona Strawbridge
Director of Digital Education

I have managed UCL’s digital education team since 2000, and my team provides institutional support and platforms for online and blended learning, digital assessment and media capture and delivery.
We are based in Information Services Division (ISD) and provide learning design advice and support, video production services, and illustration and graphic design. We deliver digital skills training and development for students and staff, and promote and support digital accessibility.
I am the ISD lead for the Education Change Portfolio which oversees institutional investment in education-related digital technology and change, and runs a set of agile product teams to develop and enhance our education platforms.
