UCL offers 33 international scholarships to help students from low-income backgrounds

8 January 2024

The UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship initiative forms part of our commitment to reduce financial barriers to higher education for students from low-income backgrounds.

UCL Student Centre

Originally launched in 2022, UCL’s Global Undergraduate Scholarship scheme aims to enable and encourage international students from low-income backgrounds to pursue full time undergraduate study at UCL.

This year, 33 scholarships are on offer, with applications open to students from all countries, with three of these being aimed specifically at students from India. 10 of these scholarships will cover full tuition fees and provide successful applicants with a maintenance allowance to cover living costs; the remaining 23 will cover full tuition fees.

Since the scheme’s inception, UCL has enabled 60 students to study at UCL. Once recruitment has been completed, UCL hopes to support up to 120 Global UCL Scholars each year.

Sadman, a second year BSc Computer Science awardee, said:

Coming from a less economically developed country, it wouldn’t have been possible for me to study at a prestigious university abroad. Thanks to the UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship, I am now one step closer to fulfilling my dreams...UCL is home to many international students and the people here are very welcoming.

Iryna, a second year MSci Pharmacology awardee, said:

Receiving the undergraduate scholarship has profoundly shaped my academic journey and university life. Beyond the tangible benefits, the scholarship has also played a crucial role in boosting my confidence and sense of self-worth... From playing on a team for my favourite sport to being the president of a society for my course, I was able to learn so many vital skills outside the classroom.

Applications for the scholarship open at the end of January. Learn more about the scheme on the Scholarships & Funding website.
