

Sport & Exercise iBSc
An exciting opportunity to study the scientific basis of Sport & Exercise Medicine, the newest medical specialty.
Throughout the course you will learn from renowned experts working in elite sport and academia about:
The scientific basis, evidence and practical skills in exercise prescription and promotion for chronic disease prevention and management.
Principles of musculoskeletal and sports injuries covering relevant anatomy and physiology, aetiology and mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment.
Clinical examination of the musculoskeletal system and biomechanical assessment.
Fundamental exercise physiology relating to health, disease and sporting performance.
Tissue healing principles underlying exercise prescription and rehabilitation of injuries relating to bone, cartilage, muscle, tendon and ligaments.
Practical application of the research process, including ethics, data protection, robust methodology, medical statistics, and development of skills in presenting work at medical conferences and scientific writing in medical journals.
This programme is partly run from the Institute of Sport Exercise & Health (ISEH)
Entry requirements
The successful completion of pre-clinical MBBS year 2.

All MBBS students are required to complete an application form which will be available on Moodle.
Who can apply?
The IBSc is a compulsory part of the MBBS programme, however exemptions can be given in exceptional circumstances these will need to be approved by Dr Brenda Cross, Faculty Tutor.
Mode of Study
- Full-time: 1 year
A one-year intercalated BSc course comprises 4 “units”. In the iBSc in Sport & Exercise Medical Sciences, there are 5 “taught” parts to the course, each one counting as a 'half-course’ unit and one research project, which counts as 1.5 complete units (3 half-units). A “taught” half unit is usually taken over 3 weeks. The research project lasts 6 - 9 weeks.

- Sport and exercise physiology
- Principles of exercise medicine
- Research methods and project initiation
- Assessment of biomechanics and sports injuries
- Tissue injury and healing
Dissertation
The final component of the iBSc is an intense in-depth research project where you will:
- Have access to a large array of research projects at Institute of Sport Exercise & Health, relating to population health, exercise physiology, musculoskeletal and basic science.
- Have opportunities to experience collaborative research with elite sports organisations.
- Aim to present work at conferences and publish work in peer reviewed journals.
