Come along to meet Charesse, your Student Adviser, and your new classmates in our friendly, ice-breaker session!

Find out a little bit more about your Student Adviser, how we can best support you during your first year at university, and the exciting events we'll have on throughout the year.

After your Student Adviser has had the chance to say hello, you'll also have an opportunity to meet your new classmates. We appreciate starting university can be a nerve-wracking time, so there will be some activities and games to get you all socialising, so you can start the term off already knowing a few friendly faces!

This event is completely free, and a great way to ease your nerves and meet some new faces before you start your course. We can't wait to see you there!

About Charesse

What was your experience of Further/Higher education like?

I attended two different universities for my undergraduate Psychology degree and had two very different experiences- for one, I was living on campus, whilst the other I commuted from home. Whilst I immersed myself more in the social aspect of the first university, I wouldn’t say I balanced that too well with the academic side. I also had some personal things going on which really impacted my time at both universities and meant I didn’t really make the most of my university experience. There were definitely elements of both experiences that I enjoyed though, and I gained a lot of independence and learnt a lot about myself.

What do you like most about your work as a Student Adviser?

My favourite part of the role is 100% meeting and connecting with students. I think we can sometimes underestimate just how helpful and powerful it can be to have the time and space to process, reflect and talk through any arising or ongoing issues. I’m really glad to have a role in that and to be able to provide students with the resources to try and manage what can be a really challenging transition. Moments like graduation and the Slade end-of-degree show also get me a bit emotional sometimes because there’s something so special about seeing the students you’ve supported make it to the end (sometimes despite the difficulties they’ve faced)!
I also really enjoy working across the teams/departments that I’m a part of and have been very lucky to have a great team on all sides. It really does make a difference!

What's a surprising or interesting fact about yourself?

I’m pretty tall, coming in at 6'0.5, but am actually one of the shorter people in my family. A lot of people assume that I’m into/good at some type of sport when they see me, but I can assure you that I am not. I love watching a lot of them though
