About Josh

What was your experience of further or higher education like?

My experience of higher education when I was a student was stressful but also exciting. It was a lot of work but a fantastic experience being able to meet new people and try new things. I enjoyed higher education because it was a chance to not just study a subject but really engage with it.

Who or what made the biggest positive impact on you when you were studying? And how did they support you?

I was a first generation university student so I was unsure on how to navigate university or what to do. I remember the student services department was fantastic at wanting to meet and talk with me about what struggles I was facing and helping me overcome them. Without their support I do not think I would have been able to graduate.

What working achievements or initiatives are you most proud of?

At the last university I worked at, I was part of an advising team that increased first year student retention significantly in the first year. The strategy was to meet with students at specific times throughout their first year to help them through any struggles. It was fantastic to see the response from students and the connections that were made.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

I would tell my younger self not to worry about making mistakes and to break out of your comfort zone.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I think people are surprised to learn that I lived and worked in Japan for 6 years. I think experiencing other cultures is one of the most rewarding experiences.
