January 2020: welcoming new students

5 December 2019

The International Student Support team take us through plans to welcome new students in January 2020.

January 2020: welcoming new students

What is the International Student Orientation Programme (ISOP)?

Each September and January, the International Student Support team organise the International Student Orientation Programme (ISOP) to help make non-UK students’ transition into life in London, the UK and studying at UCL as smooth as possible. This is also a great opportunity to meet their soon-to-be classmates!

When is ISOP?

ISOP for new graduate and affiliate students starting in January 2020 will be on 9 and 10 January 2020.

9 January 2020:

  • Enrolment from 9am onwards (Main Quad and Wilkins Building).
  • ‘We Are All Global’ talks 2–5:30pm (Logan Hall, Institute of Education).

10 January 2020:

The full schedule and more details about ISOP are available on the International Students webpages.

What happens during ISOP?

During the ‘We Are All Global’ talks, students will receive an official welcome and learn about support services, healthcare and wellbeing, and how to keep themselves and their belongings safe. They will also hear from Students’ Union UCL and have an opportunity to ask questions to a panel of Global Ambassadors (current students).

On 10 January 2020, affiliate students will attend a ‘Meet Your Department’ session in which they will receive key information from their affiliate tutor and other staff supporting them throughout their studies. New affiliates will also have the opportunity to meet other students and affiliates on their course.

Throughout ISOP, Students’ Union UCL will run a number of social events and campus tours for new students. Online ISOP is also available for any students who are unable to attend the talks in person or want to revisit information shared at them.

Enrolment

New students (both home and international), starting their studies at UCL in January 2020, will be able to enrol in person and collect their ID card on 9 January 2020 from 9am onwards. Students will have received information about where and when to enrol in their pre-enrolment confirmation email.

Students should go to the Main Quad, where staff will direct them towards the enrolment centre.

There will also be an information fair during this time. Representatives from across the university, including Library Services, Student Support and Wellbeing and Students’ Union UCL, will be on hand to speak with students and provide them with information about the services and support available at UCL.

Students unable to enrol on 9 January will be able to enrol in the Recruitment and Admissions Hub within two weeks of the start date of their programme. More information about enrolment is available on the Enrolment section of the New Students website.

Resources for new students

More information to assist students with preparing to come to UCL and their first few weeks can be found online on the ‘New Students' and ‘International students' sections of the UCL students’ website.

Information and articles, written by staff and students, about living in London and life at UCL can be found on the Countdown to UCL blog. Another great tool for new students are the UCL Checklists, which detail everything a new student at UCL needs to prepare for in chronological order.

All events, checklist and information about support and opportunities available at UCL, can be found on the 'Welcome to UCL’ app, which allows students to create their own personalized schedule for the first few days. Once students have complete pre-enrolment they are also able to access a wide range of FAQs and raise an enquiry in askUCL (the new student enquiry system).
