Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role
I am teaching academic who derives a great of pleasure in imparting knowledge and watching you all develop. I am also the Faculty’s Senior Tutor and in this role I have overall responsibility for your welfare with specific responsibility for undergraduate students.
When should students contact you?
You each will have the support of a personal tutor and other tutors within your home department but occasionally you may want to speak to someone who is outside and I am available should that be the case.
What can students discuss with you?
Should you come and see me you can discuss academic issues or any issues that are impacting on you and your studies.
Where’s your favourite place at UCL?
My favourite place is probably Gordon Square where I can be found befriending the squirrels and the great tits.

- Yasminah Beebeejaun , Faculty Graduate Tutor (Research)
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role
I am Faculty Graduate Tutor (Research) for The Bartlett and as such have an oversight of the doctoral programmes in the Faculty. I chair the Faculty Research Degrees Committee as well as representing the Bartlett at the UCL Research Degrees Committee. I help run or promote a number of cross-faculty doctoral initiatives. The research students and programmes are a vital component of our internationally respected research and teaching in the Bartlett.
When should students contact you?
Formally, MPhil/PhD students may contact me if they have problems or issues with their studies that have not been resolved at departmental level. More normally, students typically contact me in connection with cross-faculty doctoral initiatives including funded doctoral networks and/or in relation to the Bartlett Doctoral Blog.
What can students discuss with you?
I am happy to hear from students about their experiences of doctoral studies and suggestions about the Bartlett and cross-faculty initiatives.
Where’s your favourite place at UCL?
The gothic architecture of the Cruciform building - more evident in the entrance and stairwells than the lecture theatres - designed by Alfred Waterhouse.

- Peter McLennan, Faculty Graduate Tutor (Master's)
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role
My role is Faculty Graduate Tutor (Taught). I am here to help manage your relationship between UCL - your school, centre, institute, or unit - and your programme. The wider ‘tutor’ team is here to support you should any challenges arise in this relationship at three levels, personal, programme and faculty.
When should students contact you?
Life events happen, sometimes not in your best interest. The Tutor team is here to support you when the unexpected is unwanted.
What can students discuss with you?
There are three main areas for support:
- Academic administration – visas, property insurance, health & safety (duty of care)
- Academic – extenuating circumstances, exam irregularities, e.g. plagiarism
- Pastoral – personal issues, bereavement, physical and mental health

Within the wider University of London campus, it is SOAS’s Japanese roof garden.

I’m the Student Experience Manager for The Bartlett. I look after projects and initiatives to help Bartlett students succeed academically and have their say on the UCL experience.

You can discuss the experience of study at The Bartlett with me, particularly in relation to student feedback and events.
Where’s your favourite place at UCL
Gordon Square is a really pretty and buzzing space, especially in the spring and summer. There’s even a bust of the famed Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore to admire.

Where to find support as a Bartlett student
Students across The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment benefit from a range of support services. At The Bartlett we combine a challenging and invigorating educational experience with a safe and supportive learning culture. As a Bartlett student, you can access a variety of services to help with your studies as well as wellbeing support.
- Academic support and resources
UCL’s Library Services can help you find an array of print and digital resources on built environment topics. The Bartlett Library, meanwhile, gives you a dedicated space for study and research.
Whether you’re a native English speaker or English is your second language, UCL’s Academic Communications Centre can help you develop your academic writing and presentation skills.
All undergraduate and taught postgraduate students at UCL are allocated a personal tutor, who can offer you advice on your studies. Once allocated, your personal tutor will be listed on Portico. Discover how to make the most of meetings with your personal tutor on the UCL website.
- Pastoral and wellbeing support
The Bartlett’s Student Advisors are a key contact in any wellbeing matters. As well as hosting drop-in sessions and telephone appointments, the Student Advisors organise events on topics such as managing stress and overcoming imposter syndrome.
New undergraduates at UCL are each allocated a Transition Mentor, a second- or third-year student from the same degree programme. Your mentor can help you settle in and provide advice on time management and key administrative processes at UCL.
You can also look up queries on common topics including fees and finance, exams and disability support via the askUCL online platform.
Students’ Union UCL also offers support on housing, employment and money.
Bartlett students seeking guidance on their future career, whether in the built environment sector or beyond, have access to expert support from UCL Careers.
Research students at The Bartlett also benefit from guidance and support from the UCL Doctoral School and Prof Yasminah Beebeejaun, the Faculty Tutor for Research students.
How Bartlett students can have their say
UCL is committed to working in partnership with students to keep improving education and the student experience, and Bartlett students have plenty of opportunities to get involved.
The student voice is instrumental in driving changes within The Bartlett’s departments and beyond. We work with UCL and the Students’ Union to make sure student views make an impact. As a Bartlett student, you’ll be able to share your feedback and ideas in a variety of different ways.
In recent years, feedback from Bartlett students has informed changes to assessment methods, teaching content and course materials.
How you can have your say at The Bartlett:
- Become a Student Rep
Student Academic Representatives are the elected voice of students, and Students’ Union UCL currently has over 1,600 Rep positions. As a Rep, you’ll benefit from comprehensive online training and get to work with staff in your Staff-Student Consultative Committee.
You can also stand for election as a Lead Department Rep or Faculty Rep to lead discussions on how to improve education and the student experience.
All of the Rep roles develop great skills like negotiating, communication and contributing to formal meetings.
- Surveys and Continuous Module Dialogue
Bartlett students at all levels of study will have the chance to submit feedback on their experiences through student surveys, starting with New to UCL in Term One.
Students on taught programmes can also give feedback through Continuous Module Dialogue (CMD) polls during lectures or seminars throughout the year.
- UCL ChangeMakers
Bartlett students can partner with staff on a funded project to implement improvements in their area.
Approved ChangeMakers projects provide students with up to £850 in funding, as well as expert project support.
Recent ChangeMakers projects at The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment include the launch of a new student podcast and the PhD Connect event series.
