Our schools and institutes

The Bartlett is the UK’s largest and most multidisciplinary hub for built environment education and research. Our 13 schools and institutes span a unique variety of disciplines including architecture, urban design, planning, construction, resources, policy and heritage.

Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA)

An interdisciplinary research institute focusing on developing a science of cities, with the goal of making cities better places to live.

Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU)

The Development Planning Unit’s research and teaching aims to support socially just and sustainable development in the global south.

Bartlett School of Architecture (BSA)

Our influential, exciting and innovative architecture school questions what architecture could and should be. Alongside professional training, we consider the wider and deeper significance of the built environment.


Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources (BSEER)

A collaboration between our institutes for energy, environmental design and engineering, sustainable heritage, and sustainable resources.

UCL Energy Institute

The UCL Energy Institute provides world-leading learning, research and policy support on the challenges of climate change and energy security.

UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE)

IEDE investigates interactions between the built environment and health, wellbeing, productivity, energy use and climate change.

UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage (ISH)

Delivering sustainable solutions to cultural heritage problems through groundbreaking, cross-disciplinary research and training for future heritage leaders.

UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR)

ISR is focused on research into the globally sustainable use of natural resources and training future leaders in the field.


Bartlett School of Planning (BSP)

Our research-led School of Planning has over 100 years of history in training practitioners in planning and related disciplines. We link theory, policy and practice in planning and development to drive advances in the field.

Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction (BSSC)

An international centre dedicated to developing sustainable approaches to project management, real estate and economics.

UCL Institute for Global Prosperity (IGP)

The Institute for Global Prosperity is redesigning prosperity for the 21st century. We want to change the way we conceive and run our economies, and rework our relationship with the planet.


UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP)

IIPP's teaching and research focuses on changing how public value is imagined, practised and evaluated to tackle societal challenges.

UCL Urban Laboratory

A pioneering cross-disciplinary centre, promoting critical, creative and collaborative inquiry into urgent urban problems.
