Support for live online and hybrid teaching in Term 2

6 January 2022

A summary of the guidance and help available for staff conducting live online or hybrid teaching in Term 2.

Teacher in front of a class of students

It is clear that COVID-19 disruption will continue for at least part of Term 2 and that this may lead to more hybrid and live online teaching. We know this can be challenging but there is guidance available and help on hand. should you need it.

Guidance on hybrid, online teaching and audiovisual equipment

Online and 'basic hybrid' teaching resources are available on the Teaching and Learning Portal, as well as an outline of the technology available to support hybrid teaching in classrooms and support with using Audiovisual equipment. See the following pages for this guidance:

The Digital Education team are also offering new development sessions to support:

  • Designing asynchronous learning activities
  • Designing live online classes
  • Teaching live online classes
  • Designing video lectures

Check the upcoming events calendar for more details and to book onto a session.

Some students who cannot travel to London due to new restrictions have been offered flexibility to temporarily study remotely. If you're struggling with how to keep remote learners up-to-date with module content, there's a community on hand to help! Browse the content of the Connected and Blended Hub for ideas and inspiration or bring your own ideas, questions or issues directly to the new Teams community of practice. The Teams area is a place to discuss your plans or concerns, and ask questions of colleagues across UCL as well as in your own faculties.

Getting help

Some lecturers encountered AV problems and problems running hybrid sessions in Term 1, so additional support staff will be on hand in Term 2.  It is really important that lecturers report any problems to ISD so that we can resolve them not just for their class, but also for the next class to use the room!

Please seek immediate help or report problems by phone or live chat:

  • Using the pre-programmed phone in the room (in most teaching spaces), or
  • Using a UCL phone to call extension 51972, or
  • Using a mobile to call 020 3108 1972, or
  • Use the live chat facility available on the Help and support page.

Report less urgent issues by email itservices@ucl.ac.uk

Changes to departmental teaching spaces

The shift of some of departmental teaching spaces to the pool of centrally bookable spaces has caused some challenges for lecturers as those rooms don’t have the same IT or AV setup as in other teaching spaces.

To address this, managed PCs have been added where space allows and phones have been installed in all spaces. The longer-term aim will be to install standardised AV in these spaces but this will not be possible in time for teaching in Term 2.

See the Audiovisual help page for more information.
