Who am I?

About Valerie

What was your experience of further or higher education like?

I really enjoyed seeing the results of the hard work I put in throughout my studies. Although my learning experience was challenging at times, it helped me to develop both personally and professionally and I was able to identify areas I am interested in.

Who or what made the biggest positive impact on you when you were studying?

My family and my placement tutor - Sonia Gardner.

And how did they support you?

My family have always been a great support system for me. They especially helped me to stay focused and motivated whilst studying and they helped me to put things into perspective when I felt overwhelmed.

Sonia was always so friendly and approachable. She offered a safe and comforting space for me to openly express my feelings and reflect on my placement and she was a great source of encouragement.

What working achievements or initiatives are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the meaningful work I’ve completed with the young people and families I’ve worked with, especially during the pandemic. I’ve really enjoyed using a variety of methods and approaches to ensure they’re receiving the right support. It’s always lovely to see how much joy it brings a young person and their family when they achieve their goals.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

Grow through what you go through.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

A poem I wrote when I was 9 years old is published in a book.
