3 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Go on a Year Abroad to Singapore

21 February 2020

Everyone will babble on about the indisputable benefits of going on a year abroad. But before you book your flight tickets, I feel it is only fair to let you know about the downsides of committing to spending a year in this little country on the other side of the world.

Everyone will babble on about the indisputable benefits of going on a year abroad. But before you book your flight tickets, I feel it is only fair to let you know about the downsides of committing to spending a year in this little country on the other side of the world.

Reason 1: You might lose a sense of discipline

Let’s face it. When you are taking three classes which only require you to pass, it is difficult to maintain the discipline required to do well at UCL. You might end up with a lot of time on your hands. Worst case scenario – you will end up wasting it. Slightly better case scenario – you will use it to travel and explore Singapore. In either case though, you might end up having a hard time resuming your studies in London.

My solution:

Singapore is ripe with amazing opportunities. Consider taking an additional class, perhaps for a semester. Have you thought about learning a language? How about taking a class on religion and culture in Southeast Asia? Or a class to improve your public speaking? You can also make use of the multiple libraries on campus and make it a point to read during your free time. This is your time to focus on self development and learning new skills! And most importantly – what you get out of your classes corresponds to what you put in. You might only need to pass, but extra effort can get you a long way.

Reason 2: Your plans for the future might blow up

You might have it all planned out. Youll work in the City for a couple of years, then get a small house in Hampstead, with a garden, close to a nice café. Maybe you’ll get a dog. You would walk him around Hampstead Heath every morning, eventually with a pushchair. Oh, what a life… right? Wrong. A year abroad might make you question everything you thought you wanted. After all, travelling is so fun! You might fall in love with exploring new cultures. You might realise you don’t quite fancy getting lung cancer from public transport. You can do anything, you can go anywhere. You might lose the certainty which made you feel so comfortable.

My solution:

Honestly, this is a tough one. A year abroad is a wonderful experience which is bound to reveal opportunities to you which you have never considered before. This might give you a headache. Jokes aside, do not let this deter you. In a sober moment of self-reflection, I admit it… I am scared. Really scared. My life has been turned upside down. But it also feels liberating, exciting. Never forget that there are people to support you in these confusing times – from friends and family to the UCL career and mentorship services. Do not let your fears prevent you from keeping an open mind.

Reason 3: You might cry

You will likely form relationships with amazing people from around the world. Some of them might go back home after the first semester, leaving a gaping hole in your heart and schedule. Eventually, you will have to part ways with a lot of your friends as well as Singapore itself. It’s not easy.

My solution:

Just let it out. If you cry, it means you had a blast. And that’s great. Stay in touch with your international friends and make it a point to visit them if you can, your travelling experiences should not end with your year abroad!
